Jacksonville , FL August 15 2009, Saturday The 62nd Independence Day of India was celebrated by Indian Cultural Society (ICS), Jacksonville, FL and all the Indian organizations on 15th August 2009 at University of North Florida (UNF). ICS, all Organizations and many volunteers in Jacksonville put in efforts to prepare for this events. Following are some photos of prepartion.
Celebrations started with the colorful parade to depict India’s “Unity in Diversity”. Watch some recordings of cultural program (recorded by participants) Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, Unity In Diversity1 , Bharat Mata, Chithhi Aati Hai, Mere Hathon Mein, Unity In Diversity2People were dressed in regional costumes, holding indian and US flags, and singing and dancing on patriotic songs. Parade ended at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi with the distribution of healthy snacks, juices and water.
A competitive exhibition representing freedom fighters, culture from various parts of India was held in the beautiful lobby of Lazzara Hall. Everyone viewed the exhibition with great interest.
Variety cultural program followed the parade in the beautiful Lazzara Hall. Cultural program included flag hoisting, speech by the Chief Guest Mr. Dan Kleman, Director of Fire and Rescue Department, keynote speech by Mr. Balraj Mehta, classical and patriotic dances, patriotic songs sung by professional singers from our community.
A video presentation depicting all the indian organizations here in Jacksonville was beautifully presented. Decoration of stage was appreciated by all.
An award ceremony to recognize distinguished community members was held during the program. Mr. Ashok Bazaz was recognized with a plaque for the ‘Community Pillar of the Year - Man’ award, Mrs. Uma Eranky for the ‘Community Pillar of the Year – Woman’ award, and Mr. Nandu Paryani as the ‘Business Person of the Year’ award. Prize distribution for the sports contests that were held earlier were also given.
All the participants, choreographers and singers were awarded with trophies and certificates.All these celebrations were attended by around 1000 people.Delicious dinner was served after the cultural program. Antakshari was conducted after the dinner and enjoyed by all.
